Act 1: A Two-Millennia-Old Foundation
Aix was founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. Later, as Christianity spread throughout the Empire, the former pagan basilica located on the forum in the heart of the city was transformed into a unique cathedral with two naves. Initially Romanesque in style, the builders reimagined it in a singular way at the turn of the 14th century, giving it Gothic features while preserving traces of the past.
Act 2: Between Shadows and Light
From the Renaissance to the modern era, the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral continued to be embellished, enhanced by its stained-glass windows and architecture that sculpt the light. Yet construction work faced the upheavals of history. During the great plague of 1649, the city’s consuls turned to the cathedral, and to celebrate victory over death, they added a third nave—this time in the Baroque style.
Act 3: A Monument of Music
For over five hundred years, the cathedral housed a prestigious chapter of canons, whose chants still echo within its walls. Thanks to its perfect acoustics and unique architecture—an exceptional panorama spanning from Antiquity to the present day—sacred music carries us on a spectacular journey through time.
Act 4: Eternalize
The Saint-Sauveur Cathedral continues its epic story and looks toward the future. A symbol of unity and a bold emblem of the fusion between heritage and innovation, its extraordinary journey invites us to protect the past while embracing what lies ahead.
