The Monument
Iglesia de San Jacinto

Located in the heart of the Triana neighbourhood, at the corner of San Jacinto and Pagés del Corro streets and just a short walk from the Puente de Isabel II, the Iglesia de San Jacinto is woven into the historical memory of the area and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1990. The current building dates back to 1679, when the Dominican convent of San Jacinto was relocated to the site previously occupied by the ermita de la Candelaria. After the original church collapsed in 1730 due to flooding, a new one was built following the designs of Matías José de Figueroa — a leading figure of Sevillian Baroque who also contributed to the completion of the Palacio de San Telmo and the church of San Luis de los Franceses. Inaugurated in 1775, San Jacinto still houses a magnificent altarpiece from the convent of la Victoria, a fine example of Andalusian Baroque craftsmanship.

Over the centuries, the complex has been shaped by many chapters of Triana's and Seville's history: it served as a Dominican convent, then as barracks and a warehouse during the Napoleonic occupation, as a medical facility during times of epidemic, and as the home of historic religious brotherhoods before becoming a parish church in 1966. The square at its entrance also bears witness to one of the city's darkest moments — the plague epidemic of 1649 — marked by a marble cross at the corner of the building. Today, San Jacinto remains a distinctive landmark in the neighbourhood, defined by its history, popular religious devotion, and the everyday life of Triana.
