Reviews from previous cities:

Fox 29 Sacramento

“We know the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is a beautiful place as it is, but this is the way I’d describe it is beauty stacked on top of beauty and then some. You’ve got SO much going on here!”

- Hank Flynn, Fox 29

NBC Sacramento

“A breathtaking spectacle through 360 video mapping, live music and storytelling. This performance explores history, color, light, resilience, and community in the historic church ahead of America’s 250th birthday celebration.”

- NBC 10

 ABC 6 Action News

“Luminiscence tells the story of the cathedral, our city, and the founding of our country.”

- Nydia Han, ABC 6 Action News

The Sacramento Insider

“The strength of this show lies firmly in its visuals, which helped me to see one of Sacramento’s most storied edifices in a new way — alive. If you’ve been staying out of the way of the Cathedral Basilica (or have never visited), “Luminiscence” is a great excuse to step inside. I’ve felt wonder in grand places of worship over the years — the Sagrada Familia in Spain, the Cao Dai Temple in Vietnam, and the Basilica of San Clemente in Italy — but it’s been a long time since I’ve felt wonder in a church on my own soil. “Luminiscence” gave me that."

Catholic Sacramento

"The projection mapping ebbs and flows in its color and intensity revealing sacred artwork and architectural detail across nearly every surface of the church interior."

- Jay Sorgi -

The monument:
Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

At its inception, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament was the largest religious building west of the Mississippi. Constructed between 1886 and 1889 by the visionary Bishop Patrick Manogue and architect Bryan J. Clinch, its dome stands one block from the dome of the Capital Building—a deliberate reminder that both church and state must serve the common good side by side.

The exterior structure is modeled after the ornate Neo-Renaissance Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris, France. The interior is adorned with sacred, meaningful art gifted by some of the most influential families in California’s history, parishioners, and donors. With its 215-foot bell tower and its massive dome, the Cathedral has sheltered the city of Sacramento for 137 years. Recently, it has been named one of the most stunning cathedrals in the U.S. by National Geographic.

As the beloved Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Sacramento, the Cathedral has had several renovations carefully curated to keep the building and the congregation thriving. It stands today as a testament to incredible artistic ambition, Sacramento’s rich immigrant history, and the community’s desire to provide a home to all who need one.
