On the Horsteberg rises St. Paulus Cathedral, which emerged from a humble monastery. This monastery was founded by Saint Liudger and commissioned by Charlemagne. It was called "Monasterium" and would later become the city of Münster. With the growth of the city, the cathedral developed over the centuries into a unique blend of Ottonian structure and Gothic masterpieces.
St.-Paulus‑Dom is a historic landmark that lets light sparkle through its ancient stained-glass windows. The astronomical clock—an antique masterpiece of art and technology—testifies to humanity’s enduring quest for knowledge, innovation, and the struggle against the transience of earthly power. It is continuously rebuilt and refined.
The old melodies heard in the cathedral recall the long history of the site as a school and center of knowledge. They connect the past with the present and make history come alive. Enhanced by the cathedral’s extraordinary acoustics and accompanied by the mighty modern organ, these timeless melodies endure through the centuries. They echo in stone and soul, transforming the cathedral into an outstanding work of art.
Despite the destruction of World War II, Münster Cathedral, led by the brave bishop known as "The Lion of Münster," has stood firm. The cathedral was rebuilt from the ruins and connects old stones with modern visions, creating an unbroken bond between generations. Today, as new technologies highlight its timeless beauty, the cathedral remains a strong symbol of continuity, preserving heritage while offering hope and innovation for the future.
